Not just any fish are used for their production, but specific species that have proven themselves in terms of composition, purity and ecological suitability.

The most common source of omega-3 oils is small, fatty marine fish. These mainly include sardines, anchovies and mackerel. These fish species form the basis of most high-quality omega-3 products worldwide.

The most important reason for their use is their natural omega-3 content. These fish feed mainly on plankton and microalgae, which originally produce EPA and DHA. As a result, the desired fatty acids accumulate directly in the fish fat without long food chains in between.

Another decisive factor is the low level of pollution. Small, short-lived fish species are at the bottom of the marine food chain. They have less time and opportunity to accumulate heavy metals or environmental toxins than large predatory fish. This facilitates the subsequent purification of the oil and improves the initial quality.

These fish species are also beneficial from an ecological point of view. Sardines and anchovies are found in large, stable stocks and can be fished relatively sustainably. This is why many omega-3 raw materials come from fisheries that are assessed according to international environmental standards, for example through programs such as Friend of the Sea.

The most important fish species at a glance

Sardines are one of the most commonly used raw materials for omega-3 oil. They provide a balanced ratio of EPA and DHA and are rich in natural antioxidants. Sardines are mainly found in the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and off the coasts of South America.

Anchovies are particularly rich in oil and are very suitable for the industrial production of fish oil. They are often caught in the Pacific off the coast of Peru and Chile as well as in the Atlantic. Due to their short lifespan, they have a very low level of pollution.

Mackerel is also used, especially smaller mackerel species. They contain high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids and are found in many marine regions, including the North Atlantic, the North Pacific and adjacent coastal waters.

In contrast, large predatory fish such as tuna are used much less frequently as the main raw material. Although they also contain omega-3 fatty acids, they are more heavily contaminated with heavy metals and are ecologically more problematic. When tuna oil is used, it usually comes from by-products of food processing and not from targeted catches for food supplements.

Origin of the raw materials

The most important fishing areas for omega-3 raw materials are in the Pacific off South America, in the North Atlantic and in parts of the Mediterranean. Regions with cold, nutrient-rich waters favor the growth of algae and plankton and thus the natural omega-3 content of fish.

In summary, small, fatty marine fish are preferred for omega-3 capsules because they are rich in EPA and DHA, remain comparatively clean and are sustainably available. Their origin from plankton-rich marine regions makes them a particularly suitable source of high-quality omega-3 oil.

Omega-3 capsules generally contain concentrated fatty acids such as EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid).
